Fabricom Quick Turnaround Shutdown on Rough Gas Storage Field

Oil and gas EPC contractor Fabricom Offshore Services have successfully completed engineering and construction services for a major plant shutdown on the Centrica Storage owned Rough 47/3B platform within a 28 day turnaround period.

The modifications engineered and executed by Fabricom will bolster gas production during the late life phase of the asset, until the preparations for cold stacking, and through to eventual decommissioning and removal. The Rough field is entering an “end of field life” stage, but the 47/3B platform is now likely to continue to produce gas through to 2023 and possibly beyond.

The platform shutdown was successfully completed in a safe and controlled manner, with no significant HSE related incidents (lost time injuries), saving significant costs to Centrica Storage. Working in close collaboration, Fabricom and Centrica Storage have executed a lean and agile project, with a high emphasis on HSEQ performance.

Work scopes completed during the shutdown included air-gapping of redundant injection system pipework and equipment, installation of flowline flowmeters and air-gapping of an 18” sealine in preparation for future abandonment. The shutdown involved work on a multi-disciplined level, with participation from specialist subcontractors and commissioning specialists, whilst maintaining integrity of equipment and systems.

Executive Business Unit Director, Nick Oates, said “delivering this project within such a short timeframe demonstrates confidence in our offshore construction capabilities. Fabricom were able to execute the scopes of work safely, whilst maintaining costs at an acceptable level. Working in close collaboration with Centrica has strengthened our relationship, and set the tone for future work on Rough 47/3B, as we begin pre-decommissioning activities on Centrica’s other Rough asset, 47/8A.

This type of shutdown would generally have taken approximately 6 months to plan and execute, whereas Fabricom faced the challenges of a much tighter schedule. However, with an experienced and determined project management team coupled with our robust HSEQ practices, we delivered an efficient services whilst keeping everyone on the job safe.”

Greg McKenna, Managing Director at Centrica Storage commented “The recent shutdown on 47/3B was completed in challenging timescales but Fabricom ensured the project was turned around quickly and that safety was the top priority. Working in a collaborative manner allowed the project to run smoothly and as we move forward with the works in the Rough field we have confidence that Fabricom will continue to deliver a dependable and responsive service.”
