Forth Ports, the UK’s 3rd largest Ports Group, has announced the appointment of Ryan Porteous as new Harbour Master for The Ports of Dundee, Methil and Kirkcaldy.
In his role as Harbour Master, Ryan, originally from Perth, will be based at The Port of Dundee where he is now responsible for all marine operations on the River Tay.
Before his appointment, Ryan was a Trainee Pilot/Assistant Harbour Master at the Port of Montrose and previously Perth Harbour. Ryan has been working in the industry for five years and held similar roles at the Port of Southampton.
After studying Nautical Science and Marine Management at City of Glasgow College, Ryan went on to gain a Diploma for Harbour Masters from Sussex University/Lloyds Maritime Academy.
While working in his new role, Ryan will continue to work towards a BSc in Sustainable Marine Operations through distance learning at Plymouth University.
Ryan has been appointed at an exciting time for the Port of Dundee. Forth Ports has invested in a £10million heavy lift quay extension which will feature the UK’s strongest quayside, specifically designed to equip the port to handle the large scale loads demanded during both decommissioning and renewables projects.
Alan McPherson, Chief Harbour Master of Forth Ports Scottish operations, said: “We would like to offer a warm welcome to Ryan Porteous who is our new Harbour Master for The Ports of Dundee, Methil and Kirkcaldy. Ryan has been working in ports across the east coast of Scotland for the last few years and we are looking forward to seeing him develop his skills at a truly exciting time for Forth Ports.”
Commenting on his new role, Ryan said: “I am really pleased to have been appointed as Harbour Master with Forth Ports. It’s a great time to be working in Dundee’s marine sector and to be joining the team in the midst of a £10million investment in the Port of Dundee which will see the port continue as a world class facility.”
